Pitt County Department of Social Services provides financial assistance and social services to all County residents who meet eligibility criteria. Its purpose is to enable individuals to function at their maximum capacity, to become self-sufficient, to improve their standard of living, to learn to cope adequately with their problems, and to provide preventive services that will avoid family breakup and enable individuals to remain in their own homes. The two main program areas providing services are Income Maintenance Programs and the Services/Social Work Program.
Income Maintenance Programs include - Work First Employment Services, housing referrals, Food Assistance (Food Stamps), Child Support services, Emergency and Crisis Assistance, Work First Family Assistance, and Medicaid. Social Services also arranges for transportation to medical appointments for persons who receive Medicaid and have no means of transportation.
Services/Social Work Programs include - Adoption, Day-Care for Children, Foster Care for Adults and Children, Protective Services for Children and Adults, Case Management Services for Children and Adults, Services to the Handicapped or Aged and Disabled to include CAP (Community Alternative Program), Respite, Case Management and In-Home Services. The Department also monitors rest homes.
